The Organized Residents of Esquel created this website to inform the world of what is currently happening in Argentina, and of what will happen here if we allow the spread of large-scale mining operations employing toxic chemicals. We also meant this site to serve as a source of information for groups, organizations, and residents with similar struggles and hopes in our country and in all of Latin America. Esquel (Chubut) is a city in Patagonia, Argentina, where the national, provincial and municipal governments have allowed a polluting gold mining project to go forward only 6 kilometers from the city. They are supporting the transnational company Meridian (purchased by Yamana Gold) against the wishes of 81% of the city's residents, who said: "NO TO THE MINE" in the plebisicte held on March 23rd, 2003. The residents of Esquel are fighting with dignity, scientific understanding and love for life and nature against the enormous theft from the people favored by mining laws.
